James McGovern
Post Commander - Navy

Jim McGovern enlisted in the United States Navy in 1986. He attended Recruit Training in Great Lakes Illinois. In December 1986, he was assigned to Submarine school in Groton, Ct. where he studied Advanced Electronics and Weapon Systems. August 14 1988, Petty Officer McGovern reported as a Fire Control Technician on board the USS Hammerhead (SSN-663) stationed in Norfolk Virginia. Within a month's time he left on his first Mediterranean deployment. February 1989 Petty Officer McGovern Qualified in Submarines. He was involved in five major deployments where in 1991 he earned his eligibility in the Veterans of Foreign Wars by receiving a Navy Expeditionary Medal for being involved in a clandestine mission in an undisclosed location. October 1992 Petty Officer McGovern left Active Duty and affiliated with the Naval Reserves in Bronx NY. 1993-1995 he was attached to Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck NJ. 1995-2001 he was attached to the Submarine Support Facility (det 902) in Groton Ct. After September 2001. Jim was recalled to Active Duty for support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was trained as Military Police and Operated as a Train Marshall. Upon separation of Active Duty, Petty Officer McGovern was reclassified as a Master at Arms and assigned to a Security Unit in La Maddalena, Sardinia Italy. In 2005, Petty Officer McGovern was again recalled to Active Duty, trained as an Army Combat Medic, Range Master and Navy Armorer and Deployed to Balad Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon separation from Active Duty, Chief Petty Officer McGovern was recruited to establish Naval Criminal Investigation Service Support Teams, where he served as the Officer in Charge, then Senior Enlisted Advisor of the NCIS Northeast Field Office. Chief McGovern conducted numerous missions with NCIS, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Army Criminal Investigation Division prior to his transfer into the Retired Reserves September 2012. Jim McGovern joined the Yonkers City Post 1666 VFW in 1994 and has been extremely active since his retirement from the US Navy. After operating as the Building Committee Chairman he was elected Commander of the Post in April 2015. He has earned the coveted classification as ALL State Commander and All American Commander for the Years 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 He was the Department of New York Assistant Membership Chairman 2016-2017, District Two Legislation Committee Chairman 2016-2019, District Two Jr-Vice Commander 2017-2018, Sr.Vice 2018-2019 and Sat as the Department of New York representative to the Rules and bylaws committee at the VFW National Convention in New Orleans in 2017 and again In Orlando Florida. In 2019. Commander McGovern was elected as the Department of New York District 2 Commander at the District Two Meeting in May 2019 at New Paltz and sworn into office at the 98th Department of New York Convention in June at Albany. He is now responsible for approximately 6400 combat veterans in 76 VFW Post located in ten counties spanning from Staten Island to Sullivan and Dutchess counties.
